Kaleidoskop Gallery, Berlin, group show ‘Indexes and other figures’ is an exhibition of selected European artists merging photography, video and installation art. ‘Indexes and other figures’ derives from the idea of visual arts having its own theoretical and visual framework that is relatively constant and standard. It influences both the ‘process of making’ and ‘process of interpretation’. The indexical nature of video art, photography and even the installation art (less than the rest at the moment) helps making connections, contextualize, comprehend the visual, name and sketch the limits of interpretations and communications between artists and the viewer. The project shifts the focus to the indexical relation that is strongly rooted in the concept of looking at photographs, video or installation art. It gives an insight into cultural and linguistic determinants that shape the process of interpretation from both the artists’ and the viewers’ point of view. How contrastive the moment of perceiving and comprehending the visual might be when we get rid of the context and let the work be not so tied down to its textual structure.
